Open letter by the World Health Professions Alliance to Josef Blatter and Franz Beckenbauer
The World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA), representing more than 20 million physicians,nurses, dentists and pharmacists worldwide is deeply concerned about FIFA’s reluctance to reinstatethe memorandum of cooperation signed jointly by the World Health Organization (WHO) and FIFA prior to the 2002 FIFA World Cup. In the memorandum, WHO and FIFA agreed “that tobacco and sports do not mix and that tobacco in any form must be removed from all football events associated with FIFA.”(adobe acrobat pdf-file) ›› more

The UICC Global Smokefree Partnership is a new multipartner initiative promoting effective smokefree policies worldwide. Partners include the American Cancer Society, Americans for Nonsmokers Rights, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Cancer Research UK, European Respiratory Society, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Institute for Global Tobacco Control, French National Cancer Institute (INCa), Framework Convention Alliance, Global Tobacco Research Network, International Nongovernmental Coalition Against Tobacco, International Union Against Cancer. The Partnership receives financial support from its members and from other sources. The partnership is coordinated by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC).
